A belt type passenger conveyor comprises of a belt carrying the passengers and a drive system circulating at least the belt in main frame. The belt is double structured having a conveyor belt and drive belts. The conveyor belt circulates along a fast route, circulating in the main frame. The drive belts circulate along a second circulating route, formed on the inside of the first circulating route. Then, the drive belts are brought into contact with at least some part of the inner peripheral surface of the conveyor belt, to transmit a drive force for circulating the conveyor belt. The drive system comprising a driving mechanism generates a drive force which circulates the drive belts.
