A PM motor is a synchronous motor having permanent magnets fitted to its rotor. The induction motor produces torque from secondary current which is induced from rotating magnetic field, whereas in PM the motor generates torque directly from primary current thereby reducing the motor loss significantly.
The rotor loss is almost equivalent to "zero" and the total motor loss is nearly half.
A PMSM abandons the excitation winding and the rotor turns at the same speed as the stator field. The PMSM design eliminates the rotor copper losses thus giving very high peak efficiency as compared to traditional induction motor. A permanent magnet synchronous motor is lighter, smaller and more efficient than the conventional motor. The PMSM is widely used in the machine tools like robotics, actuators and is being considered in high power applications such as vehicular propulsion and industrial drives.
